The subject of attraction here is Khan el-Khalili — one of the oldest markets in the world. Consists of hundreds of shops, where one can find almost all kinds of products, Khan el-Khalili is a major souk in the Islamic district of Cairo that attracts thousands of visitors including tourists and local people.

The history of this Egyptian market goes back to 1382 when Emir Djaharks el-Khalili constructed a large caravanserai under the Burji Mamluk Sultan Barquq. Later the markets were rebuilt to establish Khan el-Khalili. During the Ottoman Empire, this market of Egypt was known as Turkish bazaar. Currently, this bazaar district is one of the greatest attractions in Cairo.

Shopping in Khan el-Khalili is an interesting experience. You will find a range of products in this market of Cairo. Due to the decline in number of western tourists, the prices in Khan el-Khalili have dropped a little bit. However, the number of shops has increased a lot. It is always good to compare the price of the product before you buy anything from here.

There are certainly some items that you can buy from Khan el-Khalili, whereas there are also some items that you should avoid buying from here. Clothing is quite cheap here. You will also find good quality spices at an affordable price. You can also buy some souvenirs from here, as these are a little bit cheaper than those available in the hotel lobby. You will find a wide variety of perfume, but it is better to avoid those, as there is always some element of doubts on their genuineness.

Besides hundreds of shops, Khan el-Khalili has also got a number of coffeehouses, street food stalls, and restaurants. Coffee shops are quite traditional, though a bit small, where you can have some Arabic coffee. Fishawi’s cafíé is a quite popular name over there.
