Compared to normal automobile events, the route in the Dakar Rally takes place in real life conditions on a tough and rough terrain. The vehicles that are used in the rally are also off-road vehicles rather than the modified cars and automobiles. The various sections of the rally are crossing dunes, off-road, mud, camel grass, rocks and erg rallies and so on. The distance of various segments ranges from short routes to long distances.

The route of the Dakar Rally mostly passes through Morocco, Western Sahara region and on to the deserts and grasslands of Mauritania. The most challenging routes are those which pass through Atar and the canyons and sand dunes of the Adrar Region of Mauritania.

Dakar Rally consists of three major competitive segments, namely the bike class, the car class, and the T4 truck class. The vehicles used in the car class range from buggies to small SUVs. Most of the vehicles used in this rally are heavily built and modified to suit extreme and tough conditions.

The Dakar Rally is a popular sporting event among adventure lovers and automobile sports freaks. Around 22 countries across the world cover the event and offer daily round-up of the event. Due to political instability in Africa, the first time in the history of the race, the 2009 Dakar Rally is being held in South America.
