Usually bone dry, Sossusvlei is thronged by local inhabitants when there is an exceptional rainfall and river Tsauchab flows. Sossusvlei in Namibia is almost circular encircled by magnificent dunes. Beyond the dunes you would see undulating sand stretching miles across upto the sea coast. The Tsauchab River plain interrupted by huge sand dunes in brilliant shades of orange and red in the early morning creates an awesome color canvas.
Sossusvlei sand dunes are about an hours drive from Sesriem campsite. The gates of Sesriem open in proper time to allow visitors to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise. If you are traveling in a two wheel drive vehicle you need to walk the last kilometer since the car cannot go near the dunes because of bad tracks. However, in a 4 wheel drive sedan you could go nearer to the dunes.
