The Garden Route lies east of Cape Town and encompasses some of the country's most beautiful mountains, beaches and rivers. It stretches on the southern coast from Heidelberg to the Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River. The coastal drive links a series of charming towns interspersed with natural beauty.

The Garden Route is a strip of land unlike any other in the world in terms of beauty, natural attractions and myriad of flora and fauna. Mountains are close to a shoreline dotted with beaches and bays. One of the most breath-taking areas in South Africa can be found between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The road connecting these two cities is known as the Garden Route.

Things To Do in The Garden Route

When visiting the Garden Route, you have a lot of leisure options, beautiful scenery and a mild climate which will make for an unforgettable holiday experience. The climate is usually mild all year round and there are countless of activities to do including whale-watching, hiking, golfing, swimming, ostrich riding, cycling or mountain biking, bungee jumping and many more.

Places To See Along the Garden Route

Mossel Bay: This bay has breathtaking beaches and several museums as well as an aquarium. Try out cage diving with sharks and bungee jump, to add excitement in your tour.

Oudtshoorn: It is a small town in the heart of the Klein Karoo. You will find many ostriches here. The Cango Caves are another highlight of this area and one of the most outstanding natural wonders of South Africa. The caves are several miles long and the route taken by you are well lit.

Knysna: A natural paradise of lush, indigenous forests, tranquil lakes and golden beaches, Knysna is nestled on the banks of a pretty lagoon, now a protected marine reserve. It is a home to the extraordinary sea horse and over 200 species of fish.

Wilderness: The beaches here are wonderful and filled with ocean-life including dolphins and whales. It is also a great place for bird-watchers.

Tsitsikamma National Park: This park is Africa's oldest and largest marine reserve, preserving and conserving the marine fauna and flora. Hikers from round the world visit the area which is known for its rugged, unspoiled coastline.

Plettenberg Bay: It is a lively town with stunning beaches, rivers and nearby forests. You will see whales, play golf, scuba dive and much more. Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary near Plettenberg Bay, ca is a multi-species sanctuary where primates roam freely through the forest. Touring the guided forest walk gives you a wonderful, unpredictable encounter with primates ranging from gibbons to lemurs to capuchins to squirrel monkeys.

The Outeniqua Choo tjoe: This popular day trip in the Garden Route will take you in the old steam train, known as Outeniqua Choo tjoe. It travels from George and Knysna. The scenery along the route is gorgeous.

Little Brak: It is a peaceful little haven of sea, lagoon and river, virtually lost in time. Little Brak lies between Mossel Bay and Groot Brak on the Garden Route.
