Some say it is the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world while others say it offers the most exciting experience that one can ever have — opinion may differ from person to person, but there is no double-opinion in the fact that South Luangwa National Park is undoubtedly one of the biggest draws in Zambia. And no wonder, it is the largest concentration of wildlife in Africa. This national park of Zambia has successfully managed to combine immense density of wildlife due to its inaccessible location and hence low footfall. So, if you are willing to take the pain of travel, an amazing experience is in store for you.

Located at the southernmost end of the valley of the Luangwa River in eastern Zambia, South Luangwa National Park has almost 60 animal species and over 400 bird species in its 9050 square km area. Mainly centered around the Luangwa River, South Luangwa National Park contains dry woodland and several oxbow lakes.

Things to Do

South Luangwa National Park has plenty to explore. There are two major access points of the park, viz. Mfuwe Gate and Nyamaluma. While in South Luangwa National Park, the first thing that you will do is to go on safari. It is one of the few national parks that offer night safaris. So, one of the major attractions here could easily be the night safari.

The park has a wide range of wildlife including hippos, crocodiles, elephants, Thornicraft’s giraffe, Crawshay’s zebra, buffalos, lions, and leopards etc. You can also find antelopes like impala and puku. There are a number of waterbucks and bushbucks as well.

(Permit is valid for 24 hours from the time of entry)


For accommodation in South Luangwa National Park, you will find a number of nice lodges. Kafunta River Lodge (Tel: +260-6-246046) and Mfuwe Lodge (Tel: +260-6-245041) are some of the lodges that you will find there. Those who love more adventure, can go for camping. Track and Trail River Camp and Flatdogs Camp could well be your destination.
