The Three Gorges is a dam across Yangtze River in China. This river dam is the site of the largest hydroelectric power station of the world’s most populous nation. In Sandouping it is reachable from Yichang in Hubei Province. Constructed primarily for controlling floods it has emerged as a premier power generating station and a grand tourist destination.
Completed in October 2008, The Three Gorges in China has 26 generators each with a capacity of 700 megawatts. After the installation of six more generators the total installed capacity of Three Gorges Hydroelectric project should reach 22,500 megawatts by the end of 2011. The most exceptional feature about this project is its environment-friendly operation. In addition to checking floods and generating electricity, this dam regulates navigation of ships along the course of River Yangtze by ship elevator and ship locks.
The most significant contribution of Three Gorges Dam apart from flood control and power generation has been environmental control.
This it does through: i) reduction of greenhouse gases caused by navigational ships, ii) instantaneous reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants; iii) waste management by treatment plants set up near the main site and along the river banks, and iv) planting of trees.
