This magnificent building was planned to provide employment to about 3000 local people who were out of job due to three consecutive years of drought. Over fifteen years from 1929 to 1944 the earning of these individuals got assured.
Constructed on Chittor Hill under the patronage of Jodhpur Maharaja, Umaid Bhawan Palace in Rajasthan covers an area of 10.5 hectares out of which about 6 hectares are occupied by lawns and 1.5 hectares by buildings. The entire palace is built without using any mortar or cement. Instead, the stones are joined by a system of curves and interlocks. This amazing building designed by Henry Lancaster, an Edwardian architect, maintains a uniform temperature of 23°C throughout the interiors. The 32 meter high central dome built in typical Renaissance pattern is surrounded by minarets constructed in traditional Rajput design. The interiors of Rajasthan Umaid Bhawan Palace were designed by Polish artist Stefan Norblin.
