You can also reach Labuan Bajo and Bima from Denpasar by ferry. Reach Komodo National Park from Labuan Bajo or Bima by chartered or shared boat.

With movements reminiscent of the Jurassic day monsters or mythical reptiles, the Komodo dragons hardly look of this world! They look more like relics of an earlier age, which is in some ways, true as well. Endemic to this region, the Komodo dragon in the wild attract thousands of nature lover, tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from different parts of the world to this Indonesian wilderness the Komodo National Park.

A national park consisting of three larger and a number of smaller islands, a national park with rich biodiversity and most importantly a national park that is dedicated to protect Komodo dragon Komodo National Park has successfully been able to amaze thousands of visitors from all parts of the world through its unique features. Be it whale sharks, ocean sunfish, manta rays, eagle rays, pygmy seahorse, false pipefish, clown frogfish, nudibranchs, blue-ringed octopus or amazing sponges, tunicates and coral the list of attractions is never-ending in Komodo National Park. And it is no wonder why you can't resist exploring this national park of Indonesia.


Komodo National Park is located near the Lesser Sunda Islands between East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia. Though founded in 1980 to protect initially the Komodo dragon, later the park extended its activities to protect other species as well including a range of marine species. Though the park has gone through a lot of changes since its initial days, yet it still remains the most preferred destination for the visitors who wish to see Komodo dragon. Besides this, you will also find other animals like Timor deer the main prey of the Komodo dragon, horses, wild boar, horses, palm civets, long-tailed macaques, fruit bats and endemic Rinca rat. It is also the place of some of the most dangerous reptiles in the world including cobra and Russel's pit viper. The park is also the home to nearly 4,000 people who live within the park. In the year 1991, UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site.

Things to Do

Most of the visitors prefer to enter into the Komodo National Park through Bima in eastern Sumbawa or Labuanbajo in the west of Flores. In Labuanbajo, you will find the Komodo National Park administrative offices. Most of the tourists pass through the Loh Liang ranger station.

The biggest reason to visit Komodo National Park is the Komodo dragon. Besides these there are a number of other species that will make you thrilled. There are two ranger stations inside the park, called Loh Liang on Komodo and Loh Buaya on Rinca, where you can get Spartan accommodation. You need to buy ticket (Rp 25,000) before you can enter into Komodo National Park. The tickets are initially valid for 3 days but can be extended further.

Hiking on Rinca:

You can also go for hiking on Rinca where, unlike Komodo, you can find wild horses and monkeys. You can also find wild buffalos quite easily there. Also visit a large cave with a resident bat colony on the north side of the island.

Scuba Diving in Komodo:

Komodo is also known to the adventure lovers for scuba diving. There are a number of operators which will take you to diving. You can also go with Dive Komodo which may cost US$180 per person for Evening Star and $120 per person for Noorigoo. Another option would be to go with Grand Komodo which may cost $780 per person for seven days. The majestic manta rays are one of the chief attractions of Komodo Island diving.

Accommodation

The best accommodation for the tourists who are visiting Komodo National Park lies inside the park. Loh Liang and Loh Buaya offer Spartan accommodation to the travelers.

Loh Liang Location: In the central area of the park.
Features: 4 tourist cottages with 4 rooms each.
Facilities: Shared bathrooms, cafeteria, souvenir shop, visitor center. No electricity.

Loh Buaya
Location: In the eastern area of the park.
Features: 1 cottage with 4 rooms.
Facilities: Shared bathroom, restaurant. No electricity.
