You may have walked through a vast plain land, sometimes covered with green grass carpet several times in your life. You may also have walked through a meadow or miles of barren land. But have you even 'landed' into a land that has thousands of jars scattered through it? — Probably not. Come to the Plain of Jars — a historic cultural site in Laos, situated in the Xieng Khouang plain in the Lao Highlands, northern end of the Annamese Cordillera. The huge jars of unknown origin, fashioned from solid stone, mostly from molasses, are scattered through in more than a dozen groupings. The jars were carved from solid boulders of different size. There are also half-finished jars in Quarries, west of Muang Sui.

Things to Do

Plain of Jars is one of the most enigmatic tourist attractions not only in Laos, but also in whole South East Asia. The Plain of Jars can be divided into three sites where the jars are clustered together. But saying so, it doesn't mean that you won't find the jars out of these clusters. In fact, there are almost 400 locations where the jars are scattered across.

Site 1, known as Thong Hai Hin, is the biggest and the most accessible site of the three. Located 15 km southwest of Phonsavan, this site has about 250 jars, weighing about 600 kg to 1 tonne each. The largest of those is the Hai Jeuam that weighs around a whooping 6 tonnes. There are also two pavilions and restrooms in the site.

Site 2, known as Hai Hin Phu Salato, is located about 25 km south of Phonsavan and accessible by road. Here 90 jars are spread out across two flanking hillsides. You need to get off the vehicle at the foot of the hills.

Site 3, known as Hai Hin Lat Khai, is located 10 km south of Hai Hin Phu Salato and 35 km away from Phonsavan. This site has an impressive 150 jars. Also visit a small monastery and Tat Lang waterfall. You need to hike about 2 km along the paddy field before you can reach the site. Accommodation

While visiting the Plain of Jars, you need to stay at Phonsavan. And there are several hotels available in Phonsavan. Some of those can be listed as below:
