Al-Hasa region and city of Hofuf
The region, extending north to Kuwait, out to the Persian Gulf, finishing off in the south with the Rub al-Khali, the Empty Quarter and the ad-Dahna desert in the west, was named after this famous oasis. Hofuf is the only city in the region, incorporating the southwestern part of the oasis. There are about 50 traditional Arabian villages scattered around the Al-hasa Oasis.
Surrounded by the ad-Dahna and ad-Daman deserts, Al-hasa, Saudi Arabia covers an area of 120 square kilometers. Apart from oil production, the chief economic occupation of the oasis is agriculture, fed by more than 60 artesian wells. The region, boasts of its wealth of almost 3 million date palms, produces various types of date. Al-hasa, known as Hajar in ancient times, is told to be the largest date palm oasis in the world. Near about 100 natural springs and artesian wells, elaborate irrigation system, well-drained, alkaline, sandy soils and above all intense heat make this area ideal for date cultivation.
Additional products found here include rice, corn, citrus and other fruits. Several egg farms add to the diversity of Al-hasa and thus making it one of the major food producers in Saudi. Though wind carrying sand is a great problem, it is largely prevented by planting tree as barriers. Besides the traditional small-scale industries, Al-Hasa has some industries producing cement and plastics.
InterContinental Al Ahsa is the only luxury hotel in the region. It is located in the Al Hofuf city, and it is advisable that you check out the availability and booking options well in advance.
