Taipei 101 Features
Taipei 101, under the management of Urban Retail Propertied Company, was designed by architects C.Y. Lee & Partners and constructed by KTRT Joint Venture. This immense structure of 101 floors is the world’s first building to cross the half kilometer mark and weighs about 700,000 tons. Though this mass in itself is capable of creating an earthquake, 101 Taipei is constructed to withstand the same with a damper of mass 660 tons consisting of eight steel cables suspending 41 steel plates. All these rest on eight viscous dampers capable of laterally moving five feet in all directions. Dampers of mass 4.5 tons are used in the tower’s spire to counter wind stimulated fatigue.
The pagoda shaped Taipei 101’s design is inspired by customary Chinese architecture. Its specifications, based on number ’8’, are testified by its eight super columns supporting an equal number of upwardly flaring sections. The sectioned tower, inspired by bamboo plant, resembles grace, resilience and strength. The plan, layout and design of the entire building are in accordance with Feng Shui traditions.
Levels 1 to 4 are utilized by retail facilities while the 5th and 6th levels are used by a fitness and health center. Offices in Taipei 101 are distributed from 7th to 84th floor, while levels 86 to 88 are dedicated for restaurants and eateries. The 85th floor is used as an installation base for a 900 ton damper. There is an indoor observation deck in the 89th floor and an outdoor one in the 91st floor. The communication facilities of 101 Taipei are installed from the 92nd to 100th floor. There is a third observation deck on the 101st floor at 438 meters height. From the rood at 448 meters, the spire extends to a height of 508 meters. Under the ground level the tower goes to five basement levels to a total depth of 31.5 meters.
Taipei 101 tower is equipped with 61 elevators, the fastest traveling at a speed of 1008 m/ minute while ascending, and 610m/ minute while descending.
