Hue Vietnam, the ancient capital of this East Asian country, had its beginnings in the 17th century. Having founded by Nguyen Dynasty, this historic city stands out because of its royal tombs, 18th and 19th century ruins, and somber ambience. The imperial city of Hue is among the most popular destinations among tourists visiting this part of the world. Situated on the northern banks of Perfume River, Hue city is looked upon with immense reverence by local people. Its lakes, canals, and vibrant green vegetation lend a tranquil feeling to the city.

The Citadel is perhaps the most outstanding site of Hue city in Vietnam. Constructed by Emperor Gia Long in 1804, the citadel as its first level of defense has a zigzag moat surrounding it. The second level of defense is a 10 km circumscribing wall, 21 meters thick and 7 meters in height. For entering the fort there are ten pedestrian gates and two water passages. Inside the citadel the ‘Dai No’ or Imperial Enclosure is another noteworthy site with a 2.5 km long and 6 meters wide wall. The Forbidden Purple City is another interesting area wherein the royal family members spent their private moments. The 37 meter high Flag Tower, popularly known as the King’s Knight, erected in 1809 and is the highest flagpole in entire Vietnam. The Thai Hoa Palace or the Palace of Supreme Harmony constructed in 1833 is another marvelous edifice. It was the throne room and reception hall of the monarch.

Other extraordinary sites include the Thien Mu Pagoda and the Dai Hong Chung. Thien Mu Pagoda is an octagonal shaped seven-storey tower built on the southern bank of River Perfume. It was built in 1844 during the regime of Emperor Thieu Tri as a testimonial for a prophesy.
