Water Puppet Show, Hanoi is a portrayal of local livelihood and myths in the form of Puppet Theater with the accompaniment of music. This traditional art form of Vietnam is still a major attraction among tourists worldwide. Puppets in the form of marionettes mounted at the end of poles are worked with the help of strings. The working of these puppets is intriguing and therein lays their beauty.
History

The history of water puppet theater in Hanoi is over a thousand years old and is held in Hoan Kiem Lake near Ngoc Son Temple. Hanoi water puppet theater is essentially a series of vignettes or skits unconnected with each other displaying events from local folklore and day-to-day happenings. The wooden puppets are lacquered and brightly colored. These puppets mounted on long poles embedded in water are worked with attached strings.

Significance

Hanoi water puppet theater is particularly significant in the portrayal of local entertainment forms. Theses hour long performances comprising about 16 skits are accompanied by live orchestral music of flutes, drums, xylophone and 'dan bau' a local harp like instrument.

Things to do

Water Puppet show in Hanoi begins from 4:15 pm with the last program beginning at 9:15 pm. Tickets for these hour long shows are sold well in advance, and you should book seats accordingly to avoid disappointments. It is important to reach Hoan Kiem Lake well before the show begins, since entry becomes barred after a show begins. Each show of 16 skits lasts for about 60 minutes for which tickets are sold in two classes: first and second. A Special Morning show is held on Sunday mornings at 9:30.
