Christchurch Cathedral in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada is the mother church of Anglican Diocese. Fredericton Christ Church Cathedral set up in the 18th century by the American Loyalists and English settlers is a prominent structure in the city's skyline. Bishop John Medley appointed newly set foot in Fredericton in 1845. Modeled on St. Mary's in Norfolk, Snettisham the design of this cathedral is termed 'revived Gothic'.
Lieutenant Governor Sir William Colebrooke in 1845 on 15th October laid the foundation stone of Christchurch Cathedral in New Brunswick which was completed in August 1853. The most prominent structure, the tower was the last to be constructed. This tower is a conspicuous feature in the Fredericton's skyline. A thunderous lightning destroyed the spire of the cathedral along with its choir. This lightning also melted the bell. Destroyed in July 1911 it was rebuilt by August 1912 at a cost of about $100,000. The rededication of this church with its newly constructed spire of 198 feet was done in the same year by Bishop Richardson. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in 1983 declared Christchurch Cathedral as a National Historic Site.
This cathedral throughout the year organizes concerts, conferences, and special programs. Two significant events held annually are the ACW Women's Conference participated by over 200 candidates, and the Summer Recital Series where renowned musicians perform every week Music is an integral part of the cathedral's activities. The 'Adult Choir' one of the oldest in Fredericton, has members aged from 17 to 81and sings on Sunday mornings and in the Evensong, monthly. Their musical numbers range from traditional Anglican Hymns and Chants to contemporary compositions. They are famous for their rendition of compositions by Rutter, Gibbons, Willan and Messiaen. Their 'Treble Choir' comprising members between 8 to 14 years of age perform regularly in the 10:00 am service. They sing the Choral Eucharist and Evensong monthly. The 'Contemporary Choir' formed in 1995 perform in the Cathedral's 'Come Worship' service at 11:45 am.
