Desert & dunes
Desert & dunes, contrary to popular belief, are tempting tourist destinations. From the hot deserts in Africa to the cold empty wilderness of Atacama and freezing surroundings of Great Basin Desert, the variations are enormous. Dunes and deserts have evolved into tourist hotspots throughout all continents.
Deserts in Africa
Desert in Africa immediately conjures images of sandy expanses from Sahara in North Africa. This desert, the largest in the world, extends about 3000 miles from East to West and an average of 650 miles from south to north. Mauritania, a considerable portion of Sahara, houses 'Richat Structure', a phenomenal geological formation in the shape of a fish eye can even be viewed from space ships. Namib Desert in Namibia in southern Africa is an outstanding tourist destination. Its exceptional sand dunes and amazing wildlife make Namib Desert an alluring place to go to. The Kalahari Desert is famous for the indigenous Bushmen.
Deserts in Asia
Thar Desert in India is glorified by its desert towns and walled cities. Jaisalmer with its yellow limestone fort and sand dunes is spectacular, and Bikaner with its Junagarh fort is awesome. Rub al-Khali in southern Arabian Peninsula is the largest sand desert renowned for its oil fields. Takla Makan in northern China is cold an famous for its continuous sand dunes.
Deserts in Australia
In Australia explore Great Victoria Desert for its salt lakes and sand hills. Its fauna consists of frogs, lizards, and small marsupials, while its flora includes small eucalyptus trees and spinifex grasses. Great Sandy Desert is characterized by dune fields, red sand plains, and rocky outcrops.
Deserts in the Americas
In North America Great Basin Desert in Arizona is the northernmost and highest of all American deserts. The other deserts are Mohave Desert, Chihuahuan Desert, and Sonoran Desert. Chihuhuan is rich in vegetation and animal species, while Sonoran is famous for its animal life. Atacama Desert in Chile, next to Pacific Ocean, is the driest place on the earth's surface and is cold. Patagonia Desert, largest in the Americas, has an enviable animal life comprising puma, weasel, pygmy armadillo, Patagonia gray fox, hawks, eagles, burrowing owl, and jumping cow spider.
