Estates Theater, with its unique charm, is among the most wondrous theater halls in Europe. Its historic significance aside, Prague Estates Theater has an immense spiritual influence on budding and established directors, playwrights, musicians, poets, and artists. This historic theater, being closely associated with Wolfgang Amdeus Mozart, carries a lot of memories of this iconic composer’s works, fortunes, and life.

Mozart had a strong attachment for Prague in general and its erstwhile Estates Theater in particular. His ‘Marriage of Figaro’ was for the first time performed in this theater in 1786, while in the following year he conducted Don Giovanni’s premiere in front of a record number of audience. Around this epicenter of Mozart’s creation, operas, classical concerts, and ballets were developed, which now have reached at an incredible heights of popularity.

This historic theater, with its architectural brilliance, was built by Frantisek Antonin Count Nostitz Rieneck, a noble, to enhance the beauty of this city and to add to the intrinsic culture of Prague at the same time. Originally named Count Nostitz’s Theater, it was opened to the public with an inaugural performance by Lessing’s Emilia Galotti in 1783. Established with the motto of ‘Patriae et Musis’ or ‘to Native Land and the Muses’, Estates Theater in Prague was later attached to National Theater with a renewed motto of ‘the Nation unto itself’. The classical style architecture of Estates Theater is typical of itself and exists in its original form.

After being merged with National Theater in 1920, drama performances became dominant. White Plague, and Mother by Karel Capek were the noteworthy play performances in the initial years.
