Oresund Bridge or Oresundsbron as it is called locally connects Skane in Sweden to Oresund and Amager in Denmark. This bridge of a length of about 16 km connects the metropolitan areas of Malmo in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark. This bridge has been so conveniently connected that about 60,000 commuters use Oresund Bridge in Denmark daily. This four-lane bridge carries about six million vehicles annually, and two railway tracks carry an additional load of eight million individuals.

Construction of Oresund Bridge in Scandinavia commenced in 1995 and opened to traffic on 1st July 2000. Danish Queen Margrethe II and Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf met in the middle of this historic bridge to inaugurate this transnational bridge. Before the formal inauguration of this bridge, completed three months ahead of schedule, a half marathon from Amager in Denmark to Skane in Sweden was held in 2000 on 12th June involving nearly 80,000 runners.

Oresund Bridge Features

The bridge, with a length of approximately 7850 meters in between the cable piers, is among the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. With a lower level for railways and an upper level for road vehicles, the highest pillar has got a height of 669 feet. This bridge is about 1.6 miles from the Danish border in the west and 3.3 miles from the Swedish border in the east. The bridge, with a vertical clearance of almost 190 feet, allows the passage of boats under it. Oresundskonsortiet was the principal consultant, while the others being Skanska AB, Hocftief AG NCC AB, Monberg & Thorsen, John Laing Ltd., Dumez-GTM SA, Boskalis Westminster, and E. Pihl & Son.
