Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is organized by Michael Eavis, a Scottish farmer since 1970 in Pilton Worthy Farm in Somerset. Its popularity gradually increased and after 2000 significant improvements in security arrangements and general organization were brought about. Today in addition to more than 100,000 visitors there are nearly 35,000 participants and organizing members.
The performances in Glastonbury are held across forty venues each with its own individual appeal. Stages come in shapes of pyramids to cafes and open at 10 o’clock in the morning. The important stages like Avalon and Bandstand remain open till past midnight, while the likes of Shangri-La and The Park remain awake till 5 or 6 in the morning. Performances range from theatrical displays, music concertos, jazz sessions, circus shows, and DJ shows.
In 2009, the Glastonbury Festival is scheduled from 26th June to 28th June and would feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Myleene Klass, Status Quo, soprano Jo Appleby, Andrew Rees, Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen, Kate Nash, John Mayer and Gilbert O’Sullivan.
