Royal Pavilion in Brighton very surprisingly grew from an inconspicuous farmhouse over a period of about 35 years. Henry Holland converted this simple farmhouse into a marine Pavilion built of neo-classical architecture which was completed in 1787. Subsequently, John Nash between 1815 and 1823 enlarged this pavilion into a full-fledged palace with domes and minarets representing Indian architectural pattern. This palace built for Crown Prince (who later became King George IV) for medical reasons was later used by King William IV and to a limited extent by Queen Victoria.
The Royal Pavilion is now a property of Brighton Town and used as a museum and assemblies. It is also used in occasions like weddings, banquets, and conventions.
Although Indian in architecture, Chinese decorative pieces have been used extensively for the interiors of Royal Pavilion. Palm trees, gilded dragons and fake bamboo staircases have been widely used for doing up the interiors. Period furniture adds to the grandeur of the Palace. The Royal Bedrooms are brilliant with mahogany furniture, block-printed wall paper, and hand-painted Chinese paper drawings. Queen Victoria’s Apartments, The Yellow Bow Rooms, and the King’s Apartments are enchanting.
The Banqueting Room is rich with the paintings of artist Robert Jones. His bold designs are remarkable. The huge Chinese canvases hung on the walls are awesome. The center dining table originally used for serving dessert items is an ideal representation of grand period furniture.
