It is a major German landmark and the most famous of Dresden. Yes, we are talking about The Zwinger Palace, also known simply as The Zwinger. A baroque complex, modeled on a Roman amphitheater and is surrounded by pavilions and galleries, Zwinger was commissioned by Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony. As its name 'Zwinger' suggests, which means outer ward of a concentric castle, there were cannons placed between the outer wall and the major wall of the palace. It was only after the construction of Semper wing, a neoclassical building by Gottfried Semper to host the Gemí¤ldegalerie Alte Meister art gallery, when the Zwinger got enclosed. Currently, the palace houses some of the most valuable art collections including the china collection of August the Strong and some of the most important painting collections of the world.
Designed by architect Matthí¤us Daniel Píöppelmann in collaboration with sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the Zwinger was constructed between 1710 and 1728, though it was formally inaugurated in 1719, much before the final completion of construction work. It was the marriage ceremony of the electoral prince Frederick August to the Archduchess Maria Josepha, the daughter of the Habsburg emperor. The palace has got six pavilions connected by large galleries, the most impressive of which are the Rampart Pavilion and the Glockenspiel Pavilion. The
While in the Zwinger, one thing that will always attract your attention is the Kronentor or Crown Gate. It is a baroque gate topped by a huge crown. The statues of nymphs and tritons in Nymphenbad are also quite attractive.
