Visiting Epidaurus

The biggest attraction of Epidaurus, as you already know, is the Sanctuary of Asklepios. The gigantic theatre, designed by Polykleitos the younger in the 4th century BC, was known for its symmetry and beauty. It was the site that was once used for dramatic performances, ceremonial Hestiatoreion, baths and a palaestra. Initially there were 34 rows in the theatre, which were extended by another 21 rows during the Roman times. With 15,000 seats, the theatre had got exceptional acoustics, which provided excellent sound quality to all the spectators irrespective of their seating arrangements. Currently, a number of plays, concerts and festivals are organized in the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus.

You can also visit the small museum on the site, which contains a number of statues and replicas. There are also a number of interesting ancient buildings. A stadium has also been excavated recently. Don't miss to visit the “Tholos”.
