Designed by architect Charles Garnier, the premises is out of fairy tale books. The marble paved atrium is lined by 28 Ionic columns of onyx. Fountains and brook bridges lend a royal touch to the compound of Monte Carlo Casino. After crossing the atrium you enter 'Salle Garnier'or the auditorium of the opera. Decorated in red and gold the auditorium has exquisite frescos, bas-reliefs, and sculptures. The auditorium has been the venue of many world acclaimed performances like Massenet's 'Cleopatra' in 1914, Rendine's 'Un Segreto d'importanza' in 1992 and Lowell Liebermann's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' in 1996. Monte Carlo Casino has been immortalized by the performances of the likes of Lubin, Dalla Rizza, Patti, Muzio, Chaliapine, Gigli, and Schipa.
It is surprising to note that this casino in Monaco is also the home of Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. This philharmonic orchestra has been led by Richard Strauss, Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir John Barbiroli and Leopold Stokowski. Among the contemporary conductors Wolfgang Sawallisch, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, and Sir George Solti have led this Philharmonic Orchestra.
