The city of Bergen was established in 1070. A Kontor of the Hanseatic League was built there in 1360 and as the town grew into a main trading center, the wharfs were automatically developed. The administrative buildings of Bryggen housed clerks from numerous areas, especially from Germany. The warehouses were packed with goods, mainly fish from northern Norway and cereal from Europe.
Parts of Bryggen were demolished in a fire in 1955. This area was used for the construction of Bryggen museum housing valuable archeological remains including some old-style wooden houses.
Bryggen perfectly illustrates the importance of the town of Bergen as part of the Hanseatic League's trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century. Its reconstruction has traditionally followed old patterns and methods and thus leaving its main structure preserved, a relic of an ancient wooden urban structure. Today's Bryggen features several attractions, souvenir and gift shops, in addition to a number of dining outlets, pubs and museums. Many of the enduring 58 buildings are now used as artists' studios.
