Obidos in Portugal would take you back five hundred years from today. This walled town with windmills, cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, and shops stuffed with artifacts is straight out of medieval Portugal. While walking down the narrow streets of Obidos, you would never miss the morning glories, bougainvilleas, and geraniums hanging from the balconies of houses lined on either sides. Just outside the city walls the farmlands and vineyards transport you to a completely rustic environment.
The entire city with the surrounding farmlands is virtually an open-air museum.
The Obidos castle, with an imperious tower, is the most recognizable landmark of this walled town. Made of limestone and marble, this castle is now converted into a Pousada or hotel. The Santa Maria Church, constructed in the 17th, century has got spectacular tile arrangements and an equally attractive Renaissance tomb. The Carmo Church is a resplendent example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The Misericordia Church built over three centuries from 15th to 18th centuries, and the St. Martinho Church are two more fascinating structures for your exploration. The Municipal Museum is worth a visit particularly for the artwork of artist Josefa de Obidos.
A trip to Senhor da Pedra Sanctuary is an inspiring escapade. Batalha Monastery and Cloister of Silence in Alcobaca town are two other stunning destinations easily accessible from Obidos.
