It was a major administrative and commercial city in Roman Spain, it was the center of the Imperial cult for all Iberian provinces, it was endowed with several wonderful buildings — the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco showcases the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Though most of those are fragmentary in nature, much of the remains of Tarraco have been preserved beneath the recent buildings. Located in the city of Tarraco, currently known as Tarragona, in the south of Catalonia in Spain, the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco is a dream destination for those who love history. Once the capital of the Hispania Tarraconensis province, Tarraco had the Roman colony named as Colonia Iulia Urbs Triumphalis Tarraco. Currently several important remains exist at Tarragona, which have become the points of attractions to the tourists.

Things to Do

There are plenty to see while you go to visit the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco. During 218 BC, the place became a Roman settlement. A huge defensive wall was built around the city. There were several Roman public buildings inside the city, which you can still see. Roman Amphitheater, built during 2nd century is currently a popular attraction in Tarraco. Also visit the other Roman remains like aqueduct outside the city. Scipio Tower and the Bara Arch should also be seen. The other attractions include Roman circus of 1st century, St. Hemenegild Vault, Minerva Tower and Statue of Augustus etc.
