During your visit to the lower Alps in Switzerland and you think you are physically up to it, do not miss a chance for zorbing: where you roll down the hill slopes in a huge transparent ball. Move through an Alpine forest from one platform to another along rope courses connecting tree tops. Jungfrau region is famous for these rope courses. Bungee jumping from 85 meters in Grindelwald or from 134 meters from Stockhorn cable car is another high adrenaline activity in the Swiss Alps. If you are fearless, you can attempt a 'canyon jump', where you fall freely and then swing from a rope end of about 80 meters at high speed through a narrow gorge.

The Alps Switzerland is the dreamland of mountaineers, skiers, hikers, and tourists. Alps and Switzerland are synonymous and that too not without reason. More than two-thirds of Switzerland's area is shared with the Alps. Be it summer or winter, autumn or spring, the Alps in Switzerland draw tourists round the year. Over 1800 glaciers and a relatively low snow line of 2500 meters ensures snow during major part of the year. Whether you go trekking in the Alpine woods in the summer and autumn, or ski jumping in the winter the Swiss Alps will never bore you.

With 48 ranges and peaks over 13,120 feet (4000 meters), Switzerland Alps is a mountaineer's paradise. Of the 48 mountains in Switzerland, Dufourspitze in Canton Valais is the highest at 15,203 feet (4634 meters). This mountain range provides a continental watershed and has given birth to the Rhone valley in the west, the Rhine valley in the northwest and north, Inn valley in the East and Ticino Valley in the south. The Reuss River flows into the Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland.

The Alps having occupied more than two-thirds of Switzerland's land area plays a significant role in the country's economy. Tourism in Switzerland is a major foreign exchange earner for Swiss economy. When you are planning a trip to Europe, a visit to the Alps and Switzerland would always be there in your itinerary be it winter of summer. Consequently when you are visiting Switzerland you by default would go to the Alps. It is not surprising that over 60% of all tourism in Switzerland is concentrated in the Alps or its foothills. Mountain railways, cable cars, sports centers, ski destinations, and sports centers for training first time climbers and skiers make the Alps thriving in activity during all 12 months of the year.

Activities in Swiss Alps

If you love mountain climbing, visit the Swiss Alps between June and September. Scale the Míönch in 1 day, Wetterhorn or Eiger peaks in 1 ½ days, or Míönch-Jungfrau in 2days. For a climbing expedition of 3 days you might try out the Eiger-Míönchs-Jungfrau peaks in succession. Travel to Interlaken in central Switzerland and enjoy all summer activities in the mountains. Skydive from 13,000 feet into the apparent bottomless valleys of the Alps. Paraglide or hang
glide to have a breathtaking bird's eye view of the lush green valleys and coniferous forests. You need not be an expert to hang glide or paraglide as instructors are there to help you. Take a flight in a 2-seater or 4-seater aircraft to enjoy the ethereal beauty of the snow capped peaks, glaciers, and snow fields of the Alps. Interlaken offers you a visual treat of the Alps from the foothills to the peaks.
