Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental Eurasian country located in the Anatolian region of West Asia and also having a small section in southeastern Europe. Bordered by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran to the east, Georgia to the northeast, the Black Sea to the north, Bulgaria to the northwest, Greece and the Aegean Sea to the west, the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus to the south and Syria and Iraq to the southeast, Turkey also has the Turkish Straits that marks the border between Asia and Europe and hence make Turkey transcontinental.

The coastal areas along the Mediterranean Sea experience a temperate Mediterranean climate where summers are hot and dry and the winters are mild, wet and cold. As you move to the interiors, the climate can be much harsher. On the other hand, the central Anatolian plateau of the interior Turkey experiences a continental climate with contrasting seasons. The temperature can go down to -30oC to -40oC in the mountain areas in the east with heavy snowfall.


Air: The largest and busiest airport in Turkey is the Ataturk International Airport (IST) in Istanbul. Flights from a number of major destinations of Europe and Asia fly to this airport regularly. Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW), located 50 km east of Istanbul, is another airport where a number of low-cost carriers come down.

Train: One can reach Turkey by train from several European and Asian destinations like Budapest, Bucharest, Pythion, Thessaloniki, and Sofia, etc. Weekly services are also available from Istanbul to Aleppo, Damascus, Tabriz, and Tehran.

Bus: Bus services are also available from various European and Asian destinations to Turkey. You can reach Turkey from several destinations like Bucharest and Aleppo.
