Ukraine meaning 'borderland' is on the threshold of ever expanding aspirations. The new generation fresh from the success of the Orange Revolution of 2004-2005 is more expressive, more liberal and more aware. This fledgling nation is gradually but positively maturing to establish itself as a dominant country in the political, cultural, and economic map of Europe.
Ukraine in Europe with its capital city Kyiv has a strong Slavic influence which is reflected by its establishments and festivals. Fabulous Crimea with its craggy landscapes would remind you of the Cossacks, who dwelled in Khortytsya Island in Dnipro River. St. Sophia's Cathedral with its Byzantine mosaic and the Caves Monastery (locally termed Kievo Pecherska Lavra are the proud possessions of this small country.
The beauty of Ukraine goes much beyond its structural monuments. The Carpathian Mountains offers idyllic hiking trails, while Kara-Dag Nature Reserve takes you through a volcanic landscape.
When to Visit Ukraine
From end April to beginning of June the chestnut trees are in full bloom and the Orthodox Easter rituals are fascinating. The summer months till August are great for outdoor activities, with the Black Sea Coast and Crimea being the centers of attraction. The winters are best spend in the skiing resorts of the Carpathian Mountains.
