Definitions and Types
An island is a land area surrounded by water. It has a few variations as one can also hear the term 'islets', 'key' or 'cay', which are used to denote the islands with very small areas. There can be several types of islands. The most common of which can be described as continental islands, oceanic islands and tropical islands. Several islands together form an archipelago. Though one can find archipelagos in the open sea, however, it can also be found in a large land mass. The countries like Japan, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and New Zealand are also mainly archipelagos.
