It is a national park protecting and conserving over 4000 archaeological sites, it had been the home for the ancestral Pueblo people from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300, it is also the place that preserves about 600 cliff dwellings – Mesa Verde National Park is a thing of wonder and a major tourist attraction in USA. Located in Colorado, this national park is known for its archaeological richness and attracts thousands of tourists every year.
Things to do in Mesa Verde National Park
Hiking is probably the best way to explore Mesa Verde National Park. It is a unique experience for any traveler to explore the Ancestral Puebloan sites by hiking through the trails in the Park. The Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House are some of the attractions in the park bearing the mark of the ancestral inhabitation. Tickets are available from the information center of the Park. One can opt for a ranger guided tour as well, though this facility is seasonal. You can buy your tour tickets from the Far View Visitor Center. The park is open all through the year. But some tours and access to some of the archaeological sites are available on a seasonal basis. First time visitors can take a look at the Park schedules available at the Visitors Center. All information related to the activities within the Park, the facilities, tours and access information can be obtained from the park schedule brochure. The Mesa Verde National Park Museum Association, a partner associated with the National Park, offers informative educational materials regarding the park and its history. Books are also available in the book store of Mesa Verde Archaeological Museum at the Far View Visitor Center.
Guided tours to the Cliff are available from early April to early November. On the other hand, guided tours to the Balcony House is available between late April and early October. One can visit the Spruce Tree House with the help of the guide during early November to early March. Guided tours to the Long House is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day. No guided tour is available to the Step House, but one can opt for a self-guided tour which is available through Memorial Day to Labor Day. Hiking is restricted to some designated trails in the National Park. While exploring the cliff dwelling, you must be accompanied by a park ranger. Some of the trails which are worth visiting in the National Park can be named as Prater Ridge Trail, Knife Edge Trail, Point Lookout Trail, Petroglyph Point Trail, Spruce Canyon Trail, Soda Canyon Overlook Trail and Farming Terrace Trail etc.
