A place that attracts thousands of visitors irrespective of the religion, cast and sect, a place that takes you to the land of ultimate peace, a religious place that often has got no religion – monastery has been an attraction for all, no matter where they come from. A monastery is a building or complex that has a room earmarked for prayer. It is the home of the monks or nuns and also has domestic quarters and workplace. Monasteries are designed to be self-contained so that the inhabitants can live their lives inside the monasteries without much interaction with the outer world. This secluded life gives the inhabitants the opportunity to come closer to the divine and to nature, and develop religious knowledge through study and contemplation.

Though Monasteries are largely associated with Christianity and Buddhism, other religions like Hinduism also have a monastic aspect. There can be various types of monasteries. The smaller ones may have a small building for one senior monk and a few other junior monks or nuns. The bigger ones have vast complexes that house hundreds of monks. Many monasteries may have their own unique customs. So, while visiting a monastery, it is always necessary to abide by the rules laid down by the monasteries. It is also important to maintain the serenity of the environment.
