Mount Kenya National Park
Location: Central Highlands in Kenya
Time to Visit: October to March. The weather is clear, and the wild animals are more easily spotted.

Take a look at the bongo antelopes, and you will know that zebras are not the automatic winners of the 'Mr. beautiful stripes' pageant. Bongos are playful, shy, and extremely rare. The only place you can see it in the wild is the Mount Kenya National Park, dense vegetation that grew on the slopes of the fabulous Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano. Mount Kenya National Park was listed among the World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO in the year 1997. The national park was established in the year 1949 and is spread over an area of 715 sq kms. The Government of Kenya developed the park to boost eco tourism in the region, for preservation of the scenic beauty of the region, to conserve the biodiversity and protect the diverse flora and fauna of the area.
Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa and rises up to a height of around 5199 meters. It is a prominent geographical feature of the Central Highlands and was formed around 2-3 million-years-ago by a number of volcanic eruptions. There are four secondary points in the mountain. The rugged landscape, volcanic traits, U-shaped glacial valleys and forested slopes make it one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in Africa.
The Mount Kenya National Park is home to diverse species of flora and fauna. The wildlife varies in the upper and the lower regions of the park. While the sprawling rainforests in the area provide an ideal habitat for elephants, buffalos, bisons, monkeys, antelope giant forest hogs and other species, the lower regions provide shelter for rare and endangered species like Colobus Monkeys and Cape Buffalos. Some part of the national park is surrounded by electrified fences to prevent elephants from encroaching in the nearby villages.

The dense rainforests are ideal habitats for different species of birds ranging from huge eagles to multi-colored sunbirds.
