Location: Located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, just 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona.
Significance: Once the largest electric-power generation station as well as the largest concrete structure in the world when completed in 1936. Currently it is the 35th largest hydroelectric generation station in the world.
Best time to Visit: Can be visited throughout the year, however, summer is the busiest season.
How to Reach: Hoover Dam, Las Vegas is located on U.S. 93. Take Interstate 15 south to I-215 east. Pass through Boulder City and reach Hoover Dam after about 8 miles.
Nearest Airport: McCarran International Airport (LAS).
It was once the largest electric-power generation station as well as the largest concrete structure in the world when completed in 1936.

Later it was surpassed by the Grand Coulee Dam in both these respects though in 1945. A structural wonder even in today’s time, Hoover Dam is something that would amaze you in its very first sight. A concrete arch-gravity dam built in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, just 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona, Hoover Dam, also known as Boulder Dam, is currently the 35th largest hydroelectric generation station in the world and one of the major tourist attractions in U.S.
Named after Herbert Hoover, one who played a pivotal role in the construction of the dam, which started in the year 1931, Hoover Dam in U.S. provides much-needed water and power to the Southwest. Due to its engineering marvel, Hoover Dam in Las Vegas started attracting tourists from 1937. Currently it draws about a million tourists from all parts of the world every year.

Visiting Hoover Dam


The thing that would draw your attention at the very first sight is the gigantic size of the Hoover Dam. Its huge hydroelectric generators would also make you amaze at the same time. Now you take a close look at the dam, you are going to get amazed for one more time. And this time, it’s the elegant Art Deco designs on the four towers, spillways and power plant of the dam which will make you spellbound.

On the Nevada side plaza, you will find two Modernist-style bronze sculptures, known as the Winged Figures of the Republic. The polished terrazzo floor is also quite interesting. See the plaque commemorating the 96 workers, died during the construction of the dam. However, no worker was buried in the concrete of the dam as according to some popular myth.

While visiting Hoover Dam, you will also visit another attraction of the place — Lake Mead. It is the reservoir created behind the dam and is also a National Recreating Area. You can go for boating, fishing, house-boating, camping, waterskiing and swimming here. Hiking along the desert surrounding the lake is also an enticing activity in Hoover Dam.

Before you leave Hoover Dam in Las Vegas, go for a paddle craft trip on the Colorado River. You can also take a guided river tour. However, access is limited in this area, as the area falls under a security zone.
