The attraction of the place gets new dimension with the vibrating presence of Lake Superior; known as the “largest, cleanest, and coldest of the Great Lakes”. Surrounded by marvelous beaches, waters and cliffs, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a paradise for the visitors.

Things to Do

There are plenty to do in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Immediately after landing at this place, the one word that you would probably hear the most is, the lighthouse. For centuries, the 6 Apostle Islands Lighthouses have been a great help for thousands ships and boats as the lighthouses guided those through the rough water of the Lake Superior. The most popular of all the lighthouses is the 44 feet tall Sand Island lighthouse. You can also visit the other lighthouses at Michigan Island, LaPointe Light on Long Island and Outer Island Lighthouse.

A good way to explore the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is through Apostle Island Cruise Service (AICS). Authorized by the National Park Service and U.S. Department of the Interior, AICS offers a varied range of sightseeing cruises, island shuttles and charter trips. Go for the popular 55-mile “Grand Tour”, it will take you to the heart of the Apostle Islands archipelago.

Bayfield is the gateway to the Apostle Island. It would also be an interesting experience for you to explore this little town.

If you are the one who loves adventure, then there are a lot in store for you in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. You can go for camping on 18 of the 21 islands of lakeshore. You need a permit before you go for camping in any of the national lakeshore camping ground. Sea kayaking has also become quite popular among the tourists. Mainland sea caves are favorite hunting grounds for kayaking. You can also go for boating, sailing and fishing in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Scuba diving is also quite popular among the adventure tourists. As Lake Superior is known for its violent weather, it is a thrilling spot for the scuba divers. There are several diving spots here, which include sea caves and cliffs like Devils Island, Sand Island, Stockton Island and “The Wall”. There are also a few historic docks like Basswood Island, Stockton Island, and Hermit Island.

4th September to 14th October: 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (Daily)
15th October to 23rd May: 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)

Accommodation

The best accommodation option is the camping. There are a number of camping grounds in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. In fact 18 or 21 islands offer camping facilities to the tourists. The camping charges start from $10. Docking could be too thrilling. The charges again start from $10.
