Charlotte Amalie, located at the center of the island of Saint Thomas, is the largest city of the US Virgin Islands. Named after Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel, queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark, the island has a great deep-sea harbor. Presently, the reputation of Charlotte Amalie rests on its importance as a stopping point for a large number of cruise ships, which include it among its port of call.

Historical Attractions of Charlotte Amalie

Signs of European, particularly Danish, colonization are clear all over Charlotte Amalie. Some of the most popular historical landmarks of the island include Fort Christian dating back to the 17th century, Legislature Building, Grand Hotel, Emancipation Park, 99 Steps and Lutheran Church. Most of them date back to 17th and 18th centuries and were built by the Danish occupants of the city. It also has the second oldest synagogue of the Western Hemisphere.
