How to Reach: If you are coming down by flight, come at Rapid City Regional Airport. Take South Dakota State Route 16 to reach Mount Rushmore, South Dakota . If you are on I-90, take exit at Rapid City and follow Highway 16 southwest to Keystone and then Highway 244 to Mount Rushmore.
Nearest Airport: Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP).

Located near Keystone in South Dakota, USA, Mount Rushmore is the huge monumental granite sculpture featuring the 60-feet high faces of four exalted US presidents, viz. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Covering 1278.45 acres of area 5,725 feet above the sea level, Mount Rushmore National Memorial represents the first 150 years' history of America. The Shrine of Democracy was crafted by Gutzon Borglum and took 14 years to complete at the cost of $1 million.

Things to Do

It makes you amaze when you see the huge sculptures on the granite. The sculptures of Mount Rushmore, South Dakota are crafted in the granite core of the Black Hills. Though there is no cave in the memorial, but you will find a ring of limestone around the Black Hills that has several caves. Visit Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument as well.

Guides Tours:

You can also go for a few other guided tours there. In Ranger Walk tour, you will walk along the first half of the Presidential Trail to the base of the mountain carving. Learn the natural and cultural history of Mount Rushmore here. If you want to know how the sculptures were carved on the mountain, go for Sculptor's Studio Talk. It is another guided tour where you will learn about the tools and techniques used in carving the sculptures. You can also explore the history of the Black Hills and the American Indian tribes by going for Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota Heritage Village tour. Audio tour is another option to learn about the Mount Rushmore through music, narration, interviews and historic recordings.

Evening Program: This program focuses on the presidents, patriotism and the history of USA. The program starts at 9 p.m. from 24th May to 14th August, whereas from 15th August to 30th September, it starts from 8 p.m.
Events: Independence Day is also celebrated at Mount Rushmore on July 3 every year.
