El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System. It is also home to the second highest mountain peak from which it derives its name. The forest is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo Mountains and is spread over an area of around 113.32 sq kms.

In the year 2002, the name of the forest was changed to El Yunque National Forest from Caribbean National Forest by then President George W. Bush. This was done to reflect the local culture and tradition of the island.


El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico is famous for its scenic beauty and idyllic atmosphere. The entire forest area consists of four major regions: Tabonuco Forest, Sierra Palm Forest, Palo Colorado Forest and Dwarf Forest. The forest is also home to a wide range of species of flora and fauna.

You can embark on sightseeing trips to the El Yunque National Forest. The local tourist board as well as other travel agencies offer full day or half day safari trips. The safari trips take place in buses, cars or four wheelers.

There are also other points of interest in El Yunque National Forest like waterfalls and cliffs where you can visit. Adventure lovers can embark on mountain hiking and trekking trips or sailing or rafting expeditions.


The El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico is spread over places like Rio Grande, Naguabo, Luquillo, Ceiba, Canovanas, Juncos, Fajardo and Las Piedras. All these consist of forest resorts, hotels and lodges to cater to travelers. All these lodging centers offer contemporary facilities within the reach of your pocket.
