Significance

El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System. It is also home to the second highest mountain peak from which it derives its name. The forest is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo Mountains and is spread over an area of around 113.32 sq kms.

In the year 2002, the name of the forest was changed to El Yunque National Forest from Caribbean National Forest by then President George W. Bush. This was done to reflect the local culture and tradition of the island.
