Palaces


Palaces have been seats of power, manifestations of wealth, and repositories of the lasting heritage of famous and powerful kings and queens. Many of these palaces were and still are used as royal residences of the monarchs, while some have been converted into museums, galleries, or luxury hotels. Tours to destinations remain incomplete without visiting these palaces.

Palaces of Europe

Perhaps the most well known of all European palaces is the Buckingham Palace in London. It is not only the official residence of the British sovereign but also its administrative headquarters. Westminster Palace, presently the British House of Parliament, is another outstanding building which is visited by millions of tourists every year.

The Palace and Park of Versailles was used as the official residence of French monarchs from late 17th century till end of 18th century. Presently it is a national museum with a collection of the most resplendent furniture, furnishings, paintings, chandeliers, and sculptures. Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg in Russia is another stunning work of Baroque architecture. Its ornate interior is mesmerizing. Würzburg Residence in Germany is another stupendous creation in Baroque architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage site was used as a residence by the prince-bishops of Würzburg.

The other remarkable palaces of Europe include Fontainebleau Palace in France, Palace of Schönbrunn in Vienna, Doge's Palace in Venice, and the Royal Domain of Drottningholm in Sweden.

Palaces in Asia

Asia is home to some of awesome palaces, many of which have been converted to hotels or museums. Lake Palace in Rajasthan in India is converted to a luxury hotel. Umaid Bhawan Palace also in Rajasthan is an exceptional construction of early 20th century. The Imperial Palace in Beijing is now the largest museum in China, while Potala Palace in Tibet is the dwelling place of the Dalai Lama.
