Salzburg Festival is an immense canvas for the performing artists. Musicians, orchestras, dramatists, and opera singers from all part of the globe gather here to exhibit their talents. This summer festival in July/ August is a significant event in the cultural world map. In Salzburg, festivals carry immense importance to the cultural life of the local inhabitants. Starting off as Salzburg Mozart Festival it subsequently included drama and opera.
History
The history of Salzburg Festival in Austria or Salzburger Festspiele goes back to 1887on the 100th anniversary of 'Don Giovanni'. Its conductor Hans Richter expressed the idea of holding an annual musical festival highlighting classical music. Thereafter, in 1919 Max Reinhard and Hugo von Hoffmannthal drafted their idea of holding regular musical festivals promoting operas, and dramas. Accordingly, in 1920 'Dompatz' was performed for the first time. In 1922, Hellbrunn festival hall was opened as a permanent venue for Salzburg Festival. Conductors of the caliber of Karl Boehm, Wilhelm Furtwangler, and Arturo Toscanini have performed in Austrian Salzburg Festival.
Salzburg Festival 2009
2009 Salzburg Festival is scheduled from 25th July to 30th August across Domplatz – Cathedral Square, Grosses Festspielhaus – Great Festival Hall, Felsenreitschule – Summer Riding School, Haus für Mozart – House for Mozart, Faistauer Foyer, Grobe Universitätsaula – Great Hall of the University, University Church, Karl-Bohm-Hall, St. Peter Abbey Church, Mozarteum, Landestheater, Perner-Insel, Hallein, and Schüttkasten.
The festival begins with a performance of George Frideric Handel's Theodora, an opera performance on 25th July 2009. The other notable operas include Cosi fan Tutte by Wolfgang A. Mozart, Exegese Nono, and Luigi Nono's Al Gran Sole Carico d'amore. Of the concerts, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Vienna Philharmonic 1, Liszt-Szenen 2, and Mozart Matinee 1 are noteworthy.
The Bacchae, Everyman, Judith, and Dichter zu Gast by Daniel Kehlmann and Tamariz Vorstellung are the dramas to be staged in this festival in Salzburg.
