Attractions at Santorini

There is a lagoon in the central location, which is surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides. These cliffs slopes down to merge with the Aegean Sea. In the entire Aegean Volcanic Arc, this volcano is the most active volcano. However a tourist can only see a water filled caldera in the island which is the only proof of the activeness of the volcano at present. The greatest attraction of this place is the fact that it happens to be one of the biggest sites of volcanic eruptions in the world. One can see a large caldera surrounded by the volcanic ashes in the island. Previous volcanic eruption has resulted in the formation of this giant size caldera. Another feature of the island that attracts the tourists towards it is Akrotiri. This archaeological site bears traces of the ruins from Minoan era. Due to the scarcity of water in the island, a desalination plant has been set up recently to provide water to the inhabitants of the island. The island has a small wine industry which is basically based on a special variety of wine called Assyrtiko. Tourists have an opportunity to taste some wine produced in the island.
