Cartagens's history goes bank to its foundation in 1533 as a port serving the Caribbean region. Cartagens emerged to a prosperous port from gold and silver
Cartagena on the Caribbean Sea has perhaps the highest shore line with gorgeous cliffs. This city is a strange amalgamation of modernity with colonial romanticism characterized by a walled city with narrow streets, tile roofed houses, balconies with potted plants and flower filled courtyards. Many of the colonial buildings inside this walled city have been converted into hotels and guest accommodations.
The entire setting inside the old town is still very medieval. Women carry fruit baskets on their heads, men sell coconuts from wheelbarrows guiding them cautiously through narrow lanes, vendors selling sweets, fruit juices, utensils and even sun glasses. You would get buckets full of freshly caught fish, oysters and crabs.
Walk up to La Popa along winding roads and get a panoramic view of the whole city. An early evening stroll to La Popa would enthuse you, particularly if you spend time with the local people enjoying their dance and music. Indulge yourself with a full body massage with an algae-and-aloe concoction given by local masseurs. With the assistance of local guides visit Plaza de Los Coches and Plaza de Aduanas the historic slave markets. Puerta del Reloj, the old clock tower was the only entrance to this walled city. The Palacio de la Inquisicion displays instruments of torture belonging to pre-Colombian and Spanish eras, and art collections of colonial and pre-independence periods. Commute in a horse-drawn carriage to relive the colonial past. Walking is also an attractive alternative.
