There is hardly a better way to understand the rich culture and heritage of the continent. The historic center is an ancient neighborhood located in the city of Salvador, Bahia. It was an important Portuguese settlement and is famous for its rich culture which is a blend of European, African and Amerindian traditions.

The Historic Center of Salvador is listed among the World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. It was the capital of Brazil in the period between 1549 and 1763 and as such enjoyed great patronage and became a renowned economic, political and cultural hub. The city has preserved its colonial and renaissance tradition and making a trip to this ancient region will really provide you a deep insight into the rich Portuguese heritage.

The Historic Center is famous its old ruins and ancient specimens. A special and unique feature of this place is that it consists of houses which are brightly colored with a fine design of stucco-work. These houses are wonderfully designed with beautiful pictures of local life. The government has taken active steps to conserve these buildings and monuments. Around 800 ancient buildings still exist today. Some of the well known historical buildings in the area are the City Hall, Paco Municipal, Palacio Rio Branco, Elevador Lacerda, and Terreiro de Jesus and so on. Other distinct features of the city are the ancient Pelourinhos or whipping posts which were used to give punishment to the slaves.

Being an ancient city, the Historic Center of Salvador is home to a number of museums. Visiting the museums will make you experience the ancient history and culture of the city. You can observe and study various ancient artifacts, relics and monuments in these museums and get a feel of the rich tradition. Some of the well known museums are Memorial da Medicina, Arqueologia e Etnologia and Afro-Brasileiro.

You can also visit the dining hubs and taste various types of mouth watering local, Brazilian and South American cuisines. Local markets are located near the historic center from where you can shop for handicrafts and local artifacts.
