Vancouver Island and Tofino in the British Columbia are studies in contrast. While Vancouver Island in the south western coast of British Columbia in Canada is a land of opportunity for outdoor adventurers, Tofino is a tranquil fishing village with an ethereal landscape. Together, they form a perfect holiday destination in the British Columbia.
The Island of Vancouver is an exciting place for wineries, wildlife and whale watching, fishing and golfing. Vancouver has more than enough to offer with its plethora of activities and landscapes for either a short tour or a long vacation. Vancouver in Canada is a fishing paradise with shoals of Coho, and Chinook Salmon to be caught. The entire coastline of Vancouver attracts fishermen in droves in August and September. Tofino in the west coast of Vancouver in particular becomes anglers' heaven from June onwards. Halibut is the most widely caught fish variety in these regions of the Pacific. Chinooks arrive in shoals to this area attracted by loads of herring and needlefish which are their main food source. Chinook Salmons over 30 lbs are recorded to have been caught. Coho a smaller variety of salmon, shrimps, and Cutthroat trout are also fished in abundance.
Vancouver Island in British Columbia is a premier diving destination. According to Jacques Cousteau Society, the waters around Vancouver Island are second only to Red Sea as far as the diversity and clarity of marine life is concerned. British Columbia has won awards for Best Wall Diving, Healthiest Marine Environment, Best Macro Live, Best Advanced Diving, and Best Dive Destination to affirm its position as a leading diving location. It is surprising to note that winter is the best season for diving around Vancouver Island because of fantastic visibility and temperate waters.
In addition to colorful and astonishing marine life you would discover remains of shipwrecks of around 100 years ago. Shipwrecks in the Graveyard of the Pacific are particularly notable. Another remarkable outdoor experience is watching of whales from close quarters. From May to October whales flock around Vancouver Island for feeding on salmons, their staple food. Orca whales in North Vancouver and blackfish or killer whales in Blackfish Sound and Johnstone Strait are the common varieties viewed here. The Pacific Rim Whale Festival held in Tofino in March attracts tourists in thousands. Be there and watch the gray whales play during their course of migration.
Balmy and sub-Mediterranean climate of Vancouver makes this Canadian island a golfer's paradise for most part of the year. Beaches, mountains, and old growth forests intercepted by meadows makes Vancouver Island a year round destination for golfers. The majority of the golf courses are located on the eastern side of Vancouver between Rover Campbell and Victoria. Tofino, Qualicum, Parksville, Nanaimo, and Cowichan are the notable golfing destinations.
