It is your best chance to get up, close and personal with the largest animal on earth. You can watch them and caress them too, as they playfully swim past your boat. When not disturbed, whales are the most playful, tolerant and fun loving sea animal you can think of. Whale Watching in Baja is a bewildering experience for the young and elderly alike. In Baja California, Mexico bordering the Eastern Pacific Ocean, whales are visible most easily all through the year. The period from December to April is particularly attractive as Pacific Gray whales migrate from the Arctic areas in and around Bering Sea to the warmer waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Coasts of Baja peninsula.
You would have a lifetime experience of really getting up and close to these gentle mammoths of the deep seas. You would have the rare opportunity being close to Blue, Humpback, Orca, Pilot, Sperm and Fin whales. Every year from December to April, Gray whales migrate to Baja waters for breeding. The warm waters around Mexico Baja Peninsula allow the whales to breed peacefully. The mother whales are proud to show her new born calves to you and hence approach your boat playfully yet with caution.
The migration of the gray whales from the Arctic regions begins from mid October and takes about two months. They start arriving near the Baja and California coasts in late December. The first to arrive are pregnant mothers and single females looking for a mate. Lagoons are the areas selected by mother whales to give birth to their calves to protect them from sharks. They remain here till February and March after which they begin their return journey to their summer feeding grounds in Chukchi and Bering Sea. Nursing mothers with their newborn calves and pregnant mothers are the last to leave Baja.
Baja, Sea of Cortez, and the Eastern Pacific Coast along Baja Peninsula are best for whale watching in January and February. The sight of a gray whale within caressing distance is irresistible. There are a number of whale watching companies who have been conducting whale watching tours regularly. You can choose a land based or boat based whale watching company depending on your fascination. A land based company would provide transportation to the whale watching sites and arrange for accommodation. Boat based whale watching companies would take you into the sea in boats. You might go for whale watching in either the Sea of Cortez to the East of Baja Peninsula, or in the Pacific Ocean to the West of this Peninsula. The Baja whale watching trips can last from 7 to 14 days. In your itinerary you could frolic on empty beaches of deserted islands.
